Pyknose ist ein Anzeichen der <a href="Apoptose" title="Apoptose">Apoptose</a>, des programmierten Zelltods.<sup id="cite_ref-zamzami_1-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-zamzami-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>In der <a href="Gyn%C3%A4kologie" title="Gynäkologie">gynäkologischen</a> <a href="Zytodiagnostik" title="Zytodiagnostik">Zytodiagnostik</a> gibt der <a href="Karyopyknoseindex" title="Karyopyknoseindex">Karyopyknoseindex</a> das Zahlenverhältnis zwischen karyopyknotischen Zellen des <a href="Vaginalepithel" title="Vaginalepithel">Vaginalepithels</a> und denen mit flächenförmigem Kern an. Er wird für die <a href="Menstruationszyklus" title="Menstruationszyklus">Zyklusbeurteilung</a> benutzt.
